Unit 4 Music Performance Learning Aim B

Nightmare Night by Mic the Microphone and Wooden Toaster

Week 1:

For my 2 songs for learning aim B I have chosen Holiday by Green Day and Nightmare Night by Mic the Microphone and Wooden Toaster. I feel these are contrasting songs as Holiday is a more repetitive, and structured song where as Nightmare Night has slightly less structure. Not only this but in the song Holiday there actually is a bass part where as Nightmare Night is piano/ keyboard. This means that i will need to learn and write tab for this song myself, which isn't easy but i have done it before with the song Rainbow Factory by Wooden Toaster, so i know i am able to do it.

Week 2:

Last week i started on Holiday by Green Day and started to learn the intro, then i moved onto the solo and remembered that i had learned the solo before, so it was easy for me to play. In my bass lesson I showed Mr Ellis my bass line, he edited it to make it easier to play and then we played it through.

Week 3:

Last week in my bass lesson i started to learn how to read sheet music, starting with rhythms and i was sent away to write a rhythm of my own. Then in my music lesson I had an idea for Nightmare Night by taking the sheet music and asking Monique to read it and give me the notes so i could figure it out from there. sadly i was unable to find any paper so was unable to do this, and then Miss told me that this would take a long time so it would be better to just figure it out by ear so, to make up for my lack of work achieved over the weekend i decided to figure out some of Nightmare Night by myself and came up with part of the intro.

Week 4:

Last week in my bass lesson i continued learning rhythms and tried some more difficult rhythms to learn. In my music lesson i continued my work on Nightmare Night and figured out the entire introduction, next week i will start to try doing the first verse.

Week 5:

Last week in my bass lesson I continued my work on rhythms, trying more difficult one and putting notes to them. In my music lesson I continued working on Nightmare night and listened to Sophie's performance, I thought it was good but she seemed very static and didn't seem to look up from the lyric sheet which is understandable but is a drawback none the less.

Week 6:

Before half term I decided I would change my second song from Holiday to Hay Ms Derpy by Forest Rain. This is not going to be on bass but instead on a guitar and I may also sing whilst playing. I then went on to figure out the introduction of the song by ear and during the half term I memorised the lyrics. In my last bass lesson I finished up my work on rhythms and in my next lesson i will be moving on to how to read notes in notation.

Week 7:

Last week I decided to change my song again from hay ms derpy to a guitar/ vocal cover of Good Riddance by Green Day which will be far easier for me to learn in the time. I also spoke to Rebecca Bunn and we chose to do a vocal cover of Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson's song Uptown Funk.

Week 8:

Last week me and Rebecca decided to stop doing uptown funk and instead do "Small Bump" by Ed Sheeran with me playing guitar and Rebecca singing. I also decided to do The Hanging Tree instead of Good Riddance. In my bass lesson i continued doing notation and was i converted notation to tab.

Week 9:

Last week me and Rebecca decided to break up our pairing altogether due to Ed Sheeran's songs being to difficult to play. I also recorded the Hanging Tree which i feel went quite well.
In my bass lesson i continued notation and converted notation to tab.
Today i am going to record my final piece, Welcome To Paradise by Green Day. This is due to time constraints as i wouldn't have been able to learn a new song by heart.
